Dubai hosts a uniquely international guest mix — travellers from 180+ countries, many visiting for the first time, some arriving from cultures where norms around dress, alcohol, and public behaviour differ significantly from local law. A well-written local guide handles this proactively and with respect, which protects guests and keeps your listing incident-free.
Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa area)
The landmark district. Most guests staying here specifically want the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and Dubai Fountain — and they want to do all three efficiently.
- Burj Khalifa: book 'At the Top' tickets online 24–48 hours ahead; level 124 vs 148 — specify the difference and your recommendation
- Dubai Fountain show: free, nightly from 6pm, every 30 minutes — best viewed from the boardwalk, not from inside the mall
- Dubai Mall: include entrance nearest your property; the mall is genuinely confusing in size (500+ shops)
- Souk Al Bahar: adjacent to the mall, older-style architecture, outdoor dining with Burj views — a quieter alternative for dinner
Dubai Marina & JBR
The most popular residential district for short-lets. Walkable waterfront, beach, restaurants, and a more relaxed atmosphere than Downtown.
- JBR Walk: 1.7km beachfront promenade with restaurants and shops — the best free evening activity in Dubai
- Beach: JBR Beach is free access; Jumeirah Beach (further south) is more spacious on weekdays
- Dubai Marina Walk: evening boat tours from the marina — popular with guests, book through any kiosk
- Metro: Dubai Marina station on the Red Line — 30 minutes to Dubai Mall, 20 minutes to Dubai Airport (T3)
Cultural Considerations for Every Dubai Guide
These apply city-wide and should be in every Dubai host guide — not as warnings, but as respectful orientation:
- Dress: modest dress in malls, souks, and cultural sites (shoulders and knees covered); beachwear only at the beach or pool
- Alcohol: available at licensed hotels and restaurants; not available in supermarkets
- Ramadan: if hosting during Ramadan, eating/drinking/smoking in public during daylight hours is not permitted by law
- Photography: avoid photographing government buildings, airports, and people without permission
- Friday: the holy day; many shops and some restaurants open late (noon onwards); great day for beach
What Every Dubai Host Guide Needs
- Nol card: RFID transit card for Metro, tram, and buses — available at all Metro stations
- Taxi vs Uber: both work well; Careem (local) is also widely used
- Heat June–September: outdoor activities only before 10am or after 6pm in summer
- Currency: UAE Dirham (AED); pegged to USD at 3.67 — easy mental maths for American guests
