Florence's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — meaning the entire walkable core is extraordinary, and staying in almost any part of it puts guests within 15 minutes of world-class art. The meaningful choice is between tourist density (Duomo area, highest) and local character (Oltrarno, across the Arno river, lowest).

Oltrarno — Best for Local Florence

  • Best for: repeat Italy visitors, food lovers, guests who want authentic neighbourhood feel
  • Walk: 10 min from Ponte Vecchio — across the Arno from the Uffizi
  • Must-mention: Santo Spirito square for the neighbourhood café and aperitivo scene, Piazza Pitti and Boboli Gardens (free garden entry after 4pm), Buca Mario for classic Florentine trattoria dining
  • Tip: Oltrarno has the best value restaurants in central Florence — the closer to the Arno, the more tourist-priced; the further south, the more local and affordable

Santa Croce — Best for Art and Market Access

  • Best for: first-time Florence visitors, art enthusiasts, families
  • Walk: 10 min from Duomo, 5 min from the Uffizi via Ponte Vecchio
  • Must-mention: Basilica di Santa Croce (Michelangelo and Galileo are buried here), Sant'Ambrogio Market for local morning food shopping, Via dei Benci for wine bars
  • Tip: the Basilica di Santa Croce has a €8 entry fee that most tourists skip — include it as an underrated highlight

San Lorenzo — Best for Market Culture and Value

  • Best for: budget-conscious guests, market shoppers, independent travellers
  • Walk: 5 min from Duomo, 5 min from Santa Maria Novella train station
  • Must-mention: Mercato Centrale (covered food market, upstairs dining hall is excellent and affordable), San Lorenzo outdoor market for leather goods (negotiate), Trattoria da Ruggero for no-frills Florentine cooking
  • Tip: the leather market at San Lorenzo is tourist-facing — tell guests the prices are negotiable and the quality varies; give them one or two trusted vendors if you know them
