Istanbul is the only city in the world on two continents — and the choice between European and Asian side fundamentally changes the guest experience. Sultanahmet puts guests in the historic core; Beyoğlu puts them in the modern city; Kadıköy puts them among Istanbulites on the Asian side. Each is a different Istanbul.
Sultanahmet — Best for Historic Sites
The old city — Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar, and the most concentrated historic density in the Mediterranean world. Guests who stay here walk to everything; the tradeoff is tourist pricing and limited neighbourhood character.
- Best for: first-time Istanbul visitors, history enthusiasts, short stays (2–3 nights)
- Tram: T1 line stops at Sultanahmet — 20 min to Eminönü, 25 min to Kabataş (ferry to Asian side)
- Must-mention: Hagia Sophia at opening (lines form by 8am), Grand Bazaar weekday mornings, Bosphorus sunset ferry from Eminönü
- Tip: the Bosphorus sunset ferry (public ferry, not tourist boat) is one of the world's great €3 experiences — include the Eminönü departure pier
Beyoğlu / Cihangir — Best for Modern Istanbul
The European side's cultural heart — İstiklal Avenue, Galata Tower, Cihangir's bohemian café culture, and the city's best international restaurant scene. Where Istanbulites go out; where creative professionals live.
- Best for: culture seekers, nightlife guests, foodies, longer stays
- Transit: Tünel funicular or walk from Karaköy; tram T1 to Kabataş then funicular
- Must-mention: İstiklal Avenue for evening walk, Cihangir for café breakfast, Karaköy dockside for coffee and Bosphorus views
- Tip: include the Galata Tower queue tip — buy tickets online to skip the line
Kadıköy — Best for Local Istanbul on the Asian Side
The Asian side's most vibrant neighbourhood — a food market, independent coffee culture, street art, and an authentically local scene that most tourists never reach. A 20-minute ferry from Eminönü; culturally a world away from Sultanahmet.
- Best for: repeat visitors, foodie travellers, guests who want authentic Istanbul
- Ferry: 20 min from Eminönü (European side) — Kadıköy Ferry Terminal
- Must-mention: Kadıköy Market for morning food walk, Moda neighbourhood for café culture, Çiya Sofrası for genuine Anatolian cooking
- Tip: the Kadıköy–Eminönü ferry at dusk is one of the best city commutes in the world — put it in the guide as an activity, not just transport
