Porto has become one of Europe's most visited cities in the past decade, and the short-term rental market has evolved with it. The Ribeira waterfront is the postcard view; Bonfim and Cedofeita are where the locals moved after Ribeira was gentrified; Foz do Douro is the Atlantic beach neighbourhood for guests who want sea air.
Note: Porto requires short-term rental hosts to register with Alojamento Local (AL). The city has introduced restrictions in some historic areas — check current licensing requirements with the Câmara Municipal do Porto before listing.
Ribeira — Best for the Classic Porto View
- Best for: first-time Porto visitors, couples, short stays
- Metro: São Bento station (15 min walk), historic tram 1 along the waterfront
- Must-mention: Ribeira Square for the Douro view at golden hour, wine cellars (caves) in Vila Nova de Gaia across the bridge (walk across Dom Luís I Bridge), Majestic Café on Rua Santa Catarina for the classic Porto café
- Tip: the upper level of Dom Luís I Bridge is a pedestrian walkway — it's a slightly terrifying and completely extraordinary walk with views both guests and the bridge both deserve
Bonfim — Best for Local Porto
- Best for: repeat visitors, foodies, longer stays, guests who've done Ribeira
- Metro: Marquês (Yellow Line) or 5-min walk from Bolhão
- Must-mention: Rua de Bonfim for independent restaurants, Bonfim flea market on Sunday mornings, Casa da Música (5 min by metro — one of Europe's best concert halls, designed by Rem Koolhaas)
- Tip: Mercado do Bolhão (Porto's historic covered market, recently restored) is the city's best food shopping — include a morning visit
Foz do Douro — Best for Beach and Atlantic Air
- Best for: families, longer stays, guests wanting beach access
- Bus: 20 min from city centre, multiple routes along Av. do Brasil
- Must-mention: Praia de Matosinhos for the Atlantic beach experience, Jardins do Palácio de Serralves for free grounds and modern art museum, seafood restaurants on Rua do Crasto in Foz
- Tip: the seafood at Foz is excellent and significantly cheaper than Ribeira despite being right on the Atlantic — recommend two specific restaurants
