Taipei is one of the world's most underrated cities for short-term stays: cheap, safe, extraordinarily convenient, and food-obsessed in a way that rivals anywhere in Asia. The MRT system is clean, cheap, and comprehensive — most guests who understand how to use it (and are in the right neighbourhood) love the city. Those who don't often feel it's harder to navigate than it actually is.

Da'an — Best for Local Culture and Coffee

  • Best for: digital nomads, longer stays, culturally curious guests, coffee enthusiasts
  • MRT: Da'an (Blue/Green Lines), Da'an Forest Park (Green Line)
  • Must-mention: Da'an Forest Park for morning tai chi watching, Yongkang Street for the best dumplings in Taipei (Din Tai Fung original), Shida Night Market for budget street food
  • Tip: Taiwan's independent café culture is remarkable — Yongkang and Siwei Road have some of the best specialty coffee in Asia at low prices

Zhongzheng (Ximending area) — Best for Shopping and Youth Culture

  • Best for: young travellers, shopping enthusiasts, K-pop and J-pop culture fans
  • MRT: Ximen (Blue/Green Lines) — central, walkable to Taipei Main Station
  • Must-mention: Ximending pedestrian zone for street fashion and food, Red House Theater arts market (weekends), Longshan Temple for traditional contrast
  • Tip: Ximending is Taipei's answer to Harajuku — the pedestrian zone is busiest 4–10pm on weekends; include this for guests planning their visit

Xinyi — Best for Taipei 101 and Upscale Stays

  • Best for: luxury guests, business travellers, first impressions of Taiwan
  • MRT: Taipei City Hall or Taipei 101/World Trade Center (Blue Line)
  • Must-mention: Taipei 101 observation deck, ATT4Fun for rooftop bars, Xinyi shopping district (Pacific SOGO, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi)
  • Tip: the Taipei 101 observatory ticket is worth buying online in advance — include the URL or QR to the booking page
